With the world’s best golfers descending upon Gleneagles to play at this year’s Ryder Cup edition, the golf world’s attention turns again to its premier events, the major tournaments.

We have made a list with top 5 tournaments in the world, in terms of popularity:

 

 

1. British Open– also known as the Open Championship, is the only major held outside the United States. The event takes place annually in Scotland or England. It was first played on 17 October 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland.

2. PGA Championship– It is one of the four major championships in professional golf and it is played in mid-August. The first PGA Championship was held in October 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York.

3. Masters Tournament– it is the first of the majors to be played each year and it is always held at the same location. On 22nd of March reached its 80 anniversary.

4. The U.S. Open– this major is characterized by tight scoring at or around par by the leaders, with the winner usually emerging at around even par. The first U.S. Open was played on October 4, 1895, on Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island.

5. The Ryder Cup– is a biennial men’s golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States and it will take place this September between 26th and 28th at the Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire, Scotland. The history of Ryder Cup goes back to 1927 when the first edition took place in the US.
